As I stepped into an old yet Grand Heritage Home located in the bylanes of Sreerampore, time stood still. The silence held echoes of a revolution once whispered into wooden cupboards and clunky presses. Right there—resting in the shadows—was Bengal’s first Bengali typeface, created by none other than Panchanan Karmakar, the Father of Bengali Typography. . Here’s a quick #infostorywithapinchofsalt. Panchanan Karmakar lived during the late 1700s, a time when printing technology was just beginning to emerge in India under the influence of European missionaries and the East India Company. . He was renowned for engraving and casting the first movable type for the Bengali script. This was a monumental achievement because Bengali is a complex script with ligatures and conjuncts that don’t follow the same structure as Roman letters. . His typefaces enabled the printing of Bengali texts, including religious texts, dictionaries, and educational materials. They played a major role in spreading literacy and modern education in Bengal. . Panchanan also helped create typefaces for over 40 Indian languages, including Sanskrit, Nagari, Telugu, Tamil, Persian, Arabic, and Marathi, making him a pan-Indian figure in the history of typography. . This isn’t just a story about fonts or letters—it’s about the man who engraved the Bengali alphabet in the 18th century, changing the trajectory of education, media, and publishing in Bengal. . Guided by @priyankamullick22, the direct descendant of Karmakar, I felt the weight of heritage and the urgency to preserve it. She believes—and I agree—that it’s time the world recognised the legacy of the Karmakar family. . If this fascinates you and your love for history, you can check out a very special exhibition where Priyanka will be showcasing these 200+-year-old typefaces and so much more. . 📍 Khelat Bhavan, Pathutria Ghat St, Jorabagan, Kol-6 📅 April 11–14, 2025 . Thank you, @koi.worldwide, @sinhakounteya, and @oiendrilaraykapur, for making me a part of this incredible experience. As a resident of Bengal and a Journalism student, I am immensely PROUD! . #PanchananKarmakar #bengalitypography #fyp #westbengal #apinchofsalt #history #bengali
