After days of drifting through Kerala’s backwaters at Coconut Lagoon and soaking up Fort Kochi’s old-world charm at Brunton Boatyard, I spent my final day at Chittoor Kottaram, an 18th-century royal mansion built for the Raja Rama Verma of Cochin — now restored as a single-key retreat. Which meant the entire three-room mansion, with all its quiet corridors and storied walls, was mine alone. A rare and beautiful break from the world. The day unfolded like a slow symphony: in the evening, a temple musician played traditional temple music just for me. Then came a serene sunset cruise, followed by a visit to the nearby Krishna Temple.
