In a breathtaking display of cultural pageantry, the elephants of Sri Lanka transform into living works of art during the Tooth Relic Festival in Jul/Aug each year. These majestic creatures, decked in intricate, bridal-like costumes, become the stars of a 10-day procession, where they parade with a grace that seems to transcend the ordinary. 👉🏻 In August, while visiting Kandy, I delved into the intricate artistry of the 10-day Esala Perahera, uncovering the stories of the craftspeople who bring its magic to life. Elephant costumes, each weighing 50 kg and requiring up to three months to stitch, are stitched in Welligalla village. 👉🏻 In Kuragala, I met Jay Pal, a traditional drum maker whose family makes Geta Beraya drums—precisely 26.3 inches long with a 33.46-inch circumference. In Pilimathalawa, brothers Vasindha and Kumar introduced me to temple brassware, an art form deeply rooted in sacred rituals. This trip wasn’t just about observing a pageant but understanding the intricate human stories woven into its fabric—that brings the Kandy Esala Perahera to life.
