
The moment, I sat at the General’s Table at the 1893-built Jehan-Numa Palace, I knew I was in for more than just a meal. The table set under a 200-year-old mango tree, the colonial architecture surrounding me, and the period photographs I glanced at—while passing through the corridors; each took me to an era when Bhopal’s nobility gathered here to discuss matters of state over elaborate feasts. 👉🏻 The General’s Table is a culinary tribute to the lavish banquets once hosted by General Obaidullah Khan, a connoisseur of fine dining. Featuring a meticulously curated 21-course meal, the experience unfolds like a royal feast, offering royal dishes such as kache keeme ke kebab, khumb galouti kebab, rezala, and filfora—all favourites of the Nawabs of Bhopal. The meat, slow-cooked to perfection, fell off the bone with the gentlest prod of my fork. 👉🏻 A standout was the Bhopali biryani, which distinguished itself from its Hyderabadi and Lucknowi counterparts with its restrained yet harmonious flavours. 👉🏻 Before 1972, Bhopal’s dense jungles influenced its cuisine, giving rise to dishes like filfora, a dish initially crafted by hunters in the wild. However, Bhopal’s cuisine evolved through royal matrimonial alliances, incorporating flavours from Rampur, Shahjahanpur, and Saharanpur. Even to date, the palace chefs preserve and recreate dishes from handwritten royal family cookbooks, ensuring a connection to Bhopal’s culinary past. As I concluded my meal with classics like shahi tukda and sheer khurma, I realised that the General’s Table hadn’t just served me dinner—it had given me a glimpse into Bhopal’s royal culinary heritage, one carefully preserved recipe at a time.
