Pushkar was an experience, colourful, chaotic, calm, all at the same time. Getting there from Ajmer wasn’t the easiest (taxis and autos will quote whatever they feel like, and with roads closing for the mela, negotiating becomes a whole sport 😅). But once you enter Pushkar, the energy shifts. The city itself felt surprisingly safe for me as a woman travelling. Most places are walkable and the lanes are full of life. The malpua at Lakshmi Mishthan Bhandar is a must-try, crispy and warm in the best way. The Maha Aarti at the Brahma Temple was one of those moments where everything just pauses. You must watch the sunset from one of the many rooftop cafés. The Pushkar Mela wasn’t as crowded as I expected, and yes, this is India, so everything runs a little late. We watched a cricket match between locals and foreigners, a turban-tying competition, and a moustache competition. The animals were beautiful, stunning camels and champion horses. Evenings by the ghat were peaceful, though fair warning: the pandits will try to scam you. A flower, a 2-minute pooja, and suddenly they want ₹1500, be firm and say no. If you are visiting during the mela, stay for at least a couple of days instead of doing a rushed day trip. Pushkar can be a relaxing holiday.
