If you’re driving to Lonavala, save this because it’ll save you almost 40 minutes. Take the connecting link just after the longest tunnel on the Mumbai Pune Expressway. Take the exit, turn left, cross the narrow bridge, and as soon as you get down, take a sharp left. This will bring you back onto the expressway. Drive for another couple of minutes and you’ll enter Lonavala from the Pune side, where Masoli is the first restaurant you’ll find. From Surmai to Pomfret, everything here is cooked on a traditional wood fire, giving the seafood a beautiful smoky flavour. The Banana Leaf Surmai was outstanding, and even though I’ve tried their Surmai Ghee Roast at their Mumbai outlet, it tasted even better here. Maybe it’s the weather, maybe it’s the cooking technique, but it just hits differently. The Pomfret Ghee Roast is another must-order. And honestly, even if they didn’t serve seafood, I’d still come here for their Chulivarche Mutton with hot bhakri. If you’re not driving, pair it with a glass of whisky. The prices are very affordable, the quality is the same as their Mumbai outlets, but the wood-fired cooking makes everything taste even better.
