Patna University: The Oxford of the East On 1 October 1917, the Imperial Legislative Council passed an Act that led to the establishment of Patna University, laying the foundation of an institution that would later earn the title “Oxford of the East.” Patna University is one of the oldest universities in India. Its establishment played a significant role in promoting higher and English education in Bihar. J. G. Jennings was appointed as the first Vice-Chancellor of the university, while Barrister Sir Syed Sultan Ahmed became its first Indian Chancellor. Under his leadership, the university witnessed remarkable growth and strengthened its academic reputation. After its establishment, Patna University assumed responsibility for many higher educational institutions across Bihar, Orissa (now Odisha), and Nepal, making it one of the most influential centers of learning in the region. In 1926, the university expanded with the construction of its iconic Wheeler Senate House, a magnificent building that remains one of the most recognizable symbols of the institution. Known as the Oxford of the East, Patna University enjoyed a distinguished reputation across India. Over the decades, it has produced numerous notable alumni who have made significant contributions to society, politics, science, and education. Among its distinguished former students are Lok Nayak Jayaprakash Narayan, former Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav, renowned mathematician Vashishtha Narayan Singh, and celebrated physicist H. C. Verma. More than a century after its foundation, Patna University continues to stand as a symbol of Bihar’s rich academic heritage, carrying forward a legacy of excellence, knowledge, and public service that has inspired generations of students.
