Even before the state’s first modern-day university was established, the city had an institution known as the Oxford of the East in Bihar. Today marks the foundation day of that esteemed institution—Patna College. Patna College was established on 9 January 1863 and has been serving the state’s literary and academic sphere for nearly 150 years. When the Dutch came to the city, they set up a tobacco storage unit near the Ganga River. After the region came under British rule, the building became unused. In 1863, it was converted into a college offering courses in literature and the arts. The Patna College building is recognized as a heritage site by the Archaeological Survey of India. Today, the college functions under Patna University and offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the arts. However, in 1957, due to the increasing number of students, postgraduate courses were shifted to Darbhanga House. Patna College has produced many notable alumni, including HMJ Sir Khan Bahadur Khuda Bakhsh, Jayaprakash Narayan, Sachidanand Sinha, Ramdhari Singh Dinkar, Lalu Prasad Yadav, and many others. The college was also featured in Satyajit Ray’s Seemabaddha. It truly stands as a masterpiece of modern history and a proud symbol of Patna’s rich heritage. @not_that_sharma 📝 Follow us for more content @unzip_patna #heritage #patna #patnauniversity #patnacollege #patnabihar
