Muharram is an example of such grief, commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, at the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD. This event holds deep religious importance for Muslims, particularly Shia Muslims, who mark it with mourning and remembrance. In Patna, this event dates back many centuries, reflecting the city's rich history and cultural diversity. In 1875, many imambaras in Patna City came together and marched with the "Alams," mourning the death of Imam Hussain. Its beauty lies in the way people of all religions come together to make this grand historic event memorable each year. Muharram hosts a very special event each year at the Imambara of Gulzar Bagh. A Majlis is held where people gather to listen to the story of Karbala — the account of a military engagement led by Imam Husain. Both Shia and Sunni attendees sit together peacefully as the story is narrated. Various colors play significant roles in Muharram. Black symbolizes mourning and grief, reflecting the sorrow over the tragic events of Karbala. In Taziah, green is used for Imam Hassan and red for Imam Hussain. In northern India, white is more prominent due to local influence, but in southern India, black becomes more prominent.
