A Muharram Procession, Patna, 1807 This painting belongs to the tradition of Company painting, a style developed by Indian artists working for British patrons in colonial India. It depicts a Muharram procession commemorating Imam Hasan and Imam Husain, the grandsons of the Prophet Muhammad. The bamboo and paper structures carried by participants, known as tazias, represent the tombs of Hasan and Husain and are central to Muharram observances. The scene provides a vivid record of religious life and public ceremony in early nineteenth-century India.
