The Roman Empire lasted for over a millennium traditionally from 27 BCE under Augustus to 476 CE in the West and until 1453 CE in the East. At its height, it controlled vast territories across Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East, supported by a powerful military, advanced engineering, and a unified legal system. However, its decline was gradual and largely internal. Political corruption and instability weakened central authority especially during the 3rd century, when Rome faced the Crisis of the Third Century, marked by rapid turnover of emperors, civil wars, and military coups. Economic problems made things worse. To fund constant wars and heavy government spending, emperors debased the currency by reducing silver content in coins, leading to severe inflation. Taxes increased, trade declined, and reliance on slave labor limited technological and economic innovation. #romanempire #rome #historyfacts
