In the summer of Dancing Plague of 1518, something truly bizarre unfolded in the city of Strasbourg (then part of the Holy Roman Empire, today in France). It reportedly began when a woman named Frau Troffea started dancing uncontrollably in the streets. Within days, dozens of people joined her, dancing endlessly without rest. Soon the number reportedly grew to hundreds, with many unable to stop even as their bodies weakened. Historical accounts claim that some dancers collapsed from exhaustion, strokes, or heart attacks after days of nonstop movement. Authorities were confused and desperate. Believing the cure was to let the dancers dance it out, officials even hired musicians and built a stage to encourage the dancing only making the situation worse. To this day, historians debate what really happened. Some believe it was caused by mass hysteria triggered by extreme stress and famine, while others suggest poisoning from moldy grain or psychological trauma. Whatever the cause, the Dancing Plague of 1518 remains one of the strangest and most mysterious events in human history. #darkhistory #unknown #didyouknowfacts
