The Soviet Union and modern Russia may share history, territory, and symbols but they were built on very different systems. The USSR was a communist superstate made up of 15 republics, ruled by a single party under leaders like Joseph Stalin. Its economy was centrally planned, the state controlled industries, and it competed globally with the United States during the Cold War. At its peak, the USSR had around 290 million people, a massive military, and influence stretching across Eastern Europe and parts of Asia. Modern Russia, however, is a single sovereign country, not a union of republics. With about 146 million people in 2026, it operates under a mixed market economy and is led by Vladimir Putin. While still a major military power and a key geopolitical player, Russia’s global influence is more regional compared to the worldwide ideological reach the USSR once had. In simple terms The USSR was an empire of ideology and republics. Russia is a nation-state carrying the shadow of that empire. #geopolitica #russia #history
