I was planning to write 3/4 reviews but my health betrayed me, so I thought to give you my reading update - currently I am reading this Historical Fiction novel. It was 1869, a British woman, Catherine embarked on a journey to Lhasa, despite being scrutinized by the society for her non womanly desire to be a traveller, she is determined to explore Tibet as the first European woman. Slowly we get to know 19th century yet to accept a woman's achievement outside home and husband. The society picture was smoothly uncovered as Catherine's thoughts goes back and forth between her journey. She is clever, well aware about the danger of the routes, so she chose to disguise herself as a pilgrim and introduces her guide as the guise of her son. Tibet is closed to Europeans, an infuriating obstruction for the rapÂidly expanding British Empire. In response, Britain begins training Indians―permitted to cross borders that white men may not―to undertake illicit, dangerous surveying expeditions into Tibet. Soon Catherine met with Balaram, surveyor spy for British, he is a school teacher in colonial India. Balaram is working for the British Empire also he is doing it for his own reason, his friend Gyan went missing on his last expedition and is rumored to be imprisoned within Tibet. Desperate to rescue his friend, Balram agrees to guide an English captain on a foolhardy mission: After years of paying others to do the exploring, the captain, disguised as a monk, wants to personally chart a river that runs through southern Tibet. As Balram and Katherine make their way into Tibet, they will face storms and bandits, snow leopards and soldiers, fevers and frostbite. What’s more, they will have to battle their own doubts, ambitions, grief, and pasts in order to survive the treacherous landscape. Deepa Anappara's writing is excuisite, the musing of travellers life narrated with gripping atmospheric background. Historical fiction really felt like a non-fiction, each chapter became alive and left you astonished. This book is not just a book, it's an immersive experience, deeply human and lavish description of Tibet unfolded like a mesmerizing adventure. Any new fav book?
