When we went to see a prospective groom, as usual, Amma started bragging about Akka's singing prowess. So, the boy's family asked Akka to sing a song. She began to sing the popular number 'Cheppalamma Srivaari Muchchatlu' from the Telugu film, Srivaari Muchchatlu. Though Akka was somewhat familiar with Telugu, she wasn't proficient enough to understand the lyrics of the song. We had all heard that Srivaari Muchchatlu was a love triangle in which Jayasudha played the sacrificial lover who let go of Nageshwar Rao for her friend Jayaprada. But little did we know that Jayasudha had sung it while sending the newlywed couple to the nuptial room, and the song meant, "Tell me the saucy ways of your consort.' Poor Akka had no clue about the song's context, as the film hadn't released in our town yet. She had just rote-learnt it from the radio. Amma was fuming on our way back. As soon as we reached home, she thrashed Akka on the back and warned her, Henceforth, if you ever sing anything other than the devotional song "Dasara Pada", I'll break your teeth.' - Vasudhendra I Love My Amma by Vasudhendra made me laugh out loud, think about the 90s and all the tales of water and food scarcity I heard from my grandparents. The incidents are funny, thought provoking and rooted in reality, feels close to heart.
