#Bookreview: Rebel English Academy by @mohammedhaneeef is an interesting take on the social fabric of the society which is filled with the vibrant shades of power, treachery, tragedy and rebellion post the execution of an important political figure.The book starts with the political execution of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto in Pakistan. It portrays the lives of Sir Baghi an English teacher and a former Mazdoor Militia Marxist who is facing a trial, his student Sahiba who is on run and the disgraced Captain Gul a former intelligence officer.This book explores the power of language and friendship.The author expertly weaves the helplessness of common people who stumble, scrap and survive with the little means available in the face of absolute power. A healthy mix of dark humour, grief, anger, jealousy and resistance greets the reader in the storyline.The multiple characters become the mirror reflecting struggles and survival in a totalitarian society.It exposed the political and societal absurdities.The well drawn characters are flawed and complex.The observant writing kept me engaged. At times, I found the character's obsession with sex to be very disturbing.It affected the flow of the story.There are some personal tragedies of a few characters that shook me deeply.The author did a great job concocting an addictive mix of dark humour and comedy with a touch of bitter realities. If you are someone who loves reading political and social satire that makes you pause and ponder, then you will surely enjoy reading this book.
