“You cannot love animals and eat them too” captures a profound ethical conflict. This sentiment revolves around cognitive dissonance, where individuals experience discomfort from holding contradictory beliefs or behaviours. Many people genuinely care for pets and wildlife, yet still consume animal products, often without realizing the ethical implications - that they are directly contributing to harming animals despite not wanting to do that otherwise. Cognitive dissonance leads to rationalisations, such as believing farm animals are different from pets or that humane farming practices justify consumption. Of course, this disconnect is further exacerbated by the fact that so much of what goes on in the meat and dairy industry is kept hidden, and dialogues normalising the need to consume these ‘products’ are constantly being perpetuated - though now all of this is slowly being dismissed and dismantled. By gently pointing out this inconsistency, we can encourage reflection and more compassionate choices. Sharing information about factory farming, personal experiences, and plant-based alternatives can help bridge the gap between values and actions. Promoting a vegan-friendly lifestyle is about inspiring awareness and change. Through dialogue, education, and leading by example, we can help others align their love for animals with their lifestyle choices, fostering a more compassionate world for all beings.
