In a world where countless videos circulate showing children instinctively rescuing animals from harm, it’s evident that our innate sense is to protect animals. When the young ones shield a helpless animal from slaughter, it serves as a powerful reminder that none of us are born with a desire to harm other living beings. Instead, the act of killing animals for food is something that is conditioned and normalised in our society—a learned behaviour that often contradicts the natural empathy we possess as children. As we grow, we are taught to disconnect from the reality of where our food comes from, to see animals not as beings with feelings and lives but as products to be consumed. This disconnect allows us to participate in a system that, deep down, many of us know is at odds with our core values. We see it in the way children react when they first learn the truth about meat; they often express sadness, confusion, and a strong desire to protect the animals they instinctively love. It’s time we recognise that this initial reaction is not naive but profoundly insightful. By choosing to go vegan, we align our actions with the empathy that comes so naturally to us as children.
