spotted in Manesar: the owner wasn’t home so a neighbour spoke to me and told me he’s taken care of but, why do we need to put them to work to begin with? Camels, often called the “ships of the desert,” have been an integral part of life in India’s arid regions for centuries. Yet today, their numbers are declining at an alarming rate. India’s camel population has fallen from roughly 11 lakh in the 1970s to around 2.5 lakh today, according to livestock census data - representing a drop of more than 75% in just a few decades. Many camels used in tourism and entertainment endure harsh conditions. They are often made to carry heavy loads or give rides for long hours in extreme heat, frequently with limited access to adequate rest, food, or water. Reports have also documented painful control methods, including ropes forced through sensitive nose cartilage, along with beating or restraint during training and handling. Organisations such as @helpinsuffering , @pfa.official and @petaindia are working to protect camels through research, advocacy and welfare initiatives. As travellers, one small but meaningful step we can take is choosing not to participate in camel rides or photo-ops while visiting tourist destinations. Supporting responsible tourism and the groups working on the ground can help ensure these remarkable animals are treated with the respect and care they deserve 🤍 . . . #camel #camelride #animalwelfare #animalcruelty #veganindia
