Deep in the wilds of the New World, Antonio de Erauso begins to write a letter to his aunt, the prioress of the Basque convent he escaped as a young girl. Since fleeing a dead-end life as a nun, he's become Antonio and undertaken monumental adventures: he has been a mule driver, shopkeeper, soldier, cabin boy, and conquistador; he has wielded his sword and slashed with his dagger. Now, caring for two Guaranà girls he rescued from enslavement, and hounded by the army he deserted, this protean protagonist contemplates one more metamorphosis, which just might save the new world from extinction…We Are Green and Trembling. 📚☕🫖 I loved the way Antonio wrote what was happening around him, in Peru. It was heartbreaking, it was poetic, it was almost a surreal dream, but it was brutal and demonic with the portrayal of a fragile human ego and power hunger that destroyed humanity. Antonio represents the eyes of history, through which we are able to see America's history. Antonio's identity continuously shifted from woman to man which I think was unnecessary, it was deliberately added to the story just to cash the new trend of inclusion, I feel it was added forcibly. It could be different. First half of the book was extremely slow yet beautifully written, poetic and soothing, and the second part was equally brutal and bloody. It's a beautiful bloody saga. The book couldn't be better if it wasn't lyrical, a heartbreaking, and heart touching ensemble from Peru.
