The Nights Are Quiet In Tehran by Shida Bazyar The Booker Prize Longlisted for 2026 1979. Behsad, a young communist revolutionary, fights with his friends for a new order after the Shah’s expulsion. He tells of sparking hope, of clandestine political actions, and of how he finds the love of his life in the courageous, intelligent Nahid. 1989. Nahid lives her new life in West Germany with Behsad. With their young children, they spend hour after hour in front of the radio, hoping for news from others who went into hiding after the mullahs came to power. 1999. Laleh returns to Iran with her mother, Nahid. Between beauty rituals and family secrets, she gets to know a Tehran that hardly matches her childhood memories. 2009. Laleh’s brother Mo is more concerned with a friend’s heartbreak than with student demonstrations in Germany. But then the Green Revolution breaks out in Iran and turns the world upside down … 📚☕🫖 A generational novel that explores emotional layers of a family and their next generation in the new world. It starts with a fighting spirit, a revolutionary young man Behsad and his journey to bring change in the country, his longin for revolution creates sparkle in a young woman's eyes in the group who later became his wife. The dream Behzad had nurtured eventually had fallen down, slowly everything changed, the people who inspired Behsad to become radical, leave him alone in the path, they returned home and the betrayal made Behsad a refugee, he had to leave the country and live in another country with another identity. As the plot goes thicken the changing morality and emotional depths create colorful tapestry, the visible changes in the family hurts, yet it's powerful and obvious that each generation has their own perspectives to see and seek connection in them. I liked the multiple narrative that gives us in-depth experience, the emotional layers, the existential crisis, and the hollowness in spirit perfectly complements the book. The quiet betrayal in the team, the changing time and differences depicted sensitive picture. Rating 3.7/5 #Bookerprizelonglist #Theladylivesinbook
