Once Upon A Summer by Manjul Bajaj is a captivating read which keeps the readers hooked till the end. The story is set in 1906 colonial India, in Nainital. The setting of the story, with charming bungalows and meadows, takes us to colonial India. The story is about Madeline Evans, a young Englishwoman, and Azeem, her Indian horse groom. An impossible and dangerous love, breaching the boundaries of race and class, starts to blossom. Almost five decades later, in New York, the publisher Alfred Allye, who has lost his wife Rose, thinks about India, of the connection he shares with Azeem, about Rose and her deep attachment to Madeline. The author's rich prose makes everything vivid. The writing style is unique and flawless, everything is described beautifully. The story is engaging and keeps us glued to the page. Such a well-written and engrossing read. This book is a multi-generational ode to love. This book takes the readers to pre-independence India. Once Upon A Summer is a tale of love, family, social norms and hold of memory. This tender love story will melt the readers' hearts. Overall, I loved this book and would strongly recommend it to all.
