Baba passed away after a two-year battle with cancer yesterday. When diagnosed, he requested that I must not discuss his condition with those who were not directly impacted. I simply obliged. Baba lived a fulfilling retired life for those two years, and I witnessed maa's incredible strength like never before. It was clear that baba had purposefully empowered her. The last 4 days were something I never wanted, but baba did not prolong the situation. This was he, who didn't burden me for a second with anything. He only gave, to me, to us, to people who realized or who may not. Even when he departed, baba sought support from only 5 people to lend hands- myself, Mehebub, my two brothers, and my niece's husband. The bare minimum. It was a quiet midnight in Kolkata when he left without any fuss. He was a man who had helped countless people yet never asked for anything in return. He was content with his life of giving, forgiving, and forgetting. I'm writing this not to let others know, but because I've always been his spoiled child and he is my most precious possession. This post is to show how blessed I am to be his only daughter. Now, I suppose my father is free to reunite with his father, who passed away when my father was 11 months old, his mother who meant everything to him, and his siblings. After all, with my father's passing, the last of my grandfather Manindra Nath Chatterjee's children has left us. Go, baba, and enjoy the afterlife.
