30th September, 2022: Onam, Kerala's auspicious rice harvest festival, also known as Thiru-Onam or Thiruvonam, occurs in the first month of the Malayalam calendar, Chingam. Onam is celebrated by decorating homes, drawing rangolis, wearing new clothes, greeting loved ones, and preparing a grand feast called the Onam Sadhya or Onasadhya, to celebrate the joyous return of King Mahabali. Today, as part of the paak kala module, MAIC 2nd Course students at @wgsha.manipal had the opportunity to not only understand the historical and cultural significance of Onam Sadhya, but also to firsthand experience the method of cooking each of the items. The students made a total of 18 dishes namely, Pulissery, Eriserry, Kaalan, Olan, Pachdi, Chenna Mezhukkupuratti, Injipuli, Parripu Curry, Chor, Sambhar, Morru Kachiyatha, Avial, Rasam, Kootu Curry, Parippu Pradhaman, Inji Thayir, sundal, Thoran, Palada Pradhaman and finished it off with Poovan Pazham accompaniment. The dishes were served in a specific order, as is customary, and were enjoyed by the students and faculty.It was an excellent opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience.
