One lazy afternoon in Manipal, I woke up around 11 or 12. It wasn’t even morning at that point. I had been up late the previous night studying and researching, so I was completely out. Just as I was getting out of bed, my ex-roommate @sreejith__pj called. He’s from Kerala, and in his classic Mallu accent he spoke in Hindi and said, “Thimappa chlega fish thali khayega” I hesitated. I told him straight—I’m not a big fan of the smell of fish. But he promised I’d like it. So, I said yes and hopped on the bike with him. We rode from Manipal to Adi Udupi, which is on the way to Malpe beach, and reached Thimappa Restaurant. I had actually been there before with my college group but only eaten veg food because, again, fish smell. This time was different. I ordered the fish thali. It was just 40 rupees for unlimited rice (both red parboiled matta rice and white rice), beetroot curry, mango pickle, and fish curry. Even the fish curry was unlimited, but from the second serving onwards, you only got the gravy. On the side, you could pick different fishes—mackerel, kingfish, lapu, and more. I decided to try one dharne of kingfish. It came coated in this bright red masala paste made of chillies, garlic, and spices, pan-seared perfectly. I had it with matta rice, and it was amazing. Funny thing, I’d never eaten matta rice before coming to Manipal, but once I tried it here, I loved it. Even in the hostel mess, I used to enjoy it with chicken kori gassi. So, having it with fish curry and the kingfish dharne just felt right. I enjoyed it so much I ended up ordering another dharne of kingfish. After finishing the meal, we rode back, stopped at Pai Tiffins for filter coffee, and then returned to our hostels. Back in my room, I jumped straight into my books again, but that fish thali stayed in my head for the rest of the day. Thanks @wgsha.manipal and faculty for encouraging us in exploration of such spots. #foodstories #udupidiaries #kingfish #konkani_status #foodfinds #Udupi #Manipal #dotudupi #udupitourism #thisisudupi #fishfry #mackrel #fishcurry
