Winter Hiking near Lake Nordenskjold with Paine Grande in background in Torres del Paine National Park, Patagonia, Chile. One of Chile's most prized possessions, the Torres del Paine National Park, is a meeting point for hikers and nature enthusiasts that nowadays attracts more than a quarter million tourists a year. But unfortunately, this beloved park is in danger of being suffocated by so much adoration. The increasing number of visitors, along with the continuous scourge of wind and rain, are rapidly degrading the trails. Without an immediate intervention the erosion will become too severe and the trails will be permanently damaged. Many of the roads were originally created to allow livestock, not to meet the current standards required for sustainable hiking trails. Improving the trails is important, both to protect the ecosystem and to ensure a safe and quality experience for visitors. Repairing and redesigning the park's most important path for me is a great recognition of the importance of trails in protected areas, and of our connection to nature.
