⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 Before being a mother, I excelled at everything I attempted through sheer determination and meticulous planning. Then I became a mother, and suddenly nothing worked the way it was supposed to. I was the target audience for this book and didn't even know it. Ferris dismantles perfectionism without making you feel pathetic for having held yourself to impossible standards. Her approach is compassionate toward the very tendencies she's asking you to release. The sections on mistakes as learning opportunities and the permission to not fight every battle provided relief I didn't realize I desperately needed. The practical tools throughout are genuinely helpful rather than theoretical. I've implemented several strategies with real results. More importantly, I've stopped viewing my parenting struggles as personal failures. This book helped me understand that presence matters more than perfection, and that showing my child how to treat yourself with kindness might be one of the most important lessons I can offer them. I used to research every parenting decision obsessively, convinced there was one right answer I needed to find. Now I trust my instincts more and worry less about whether I'm doing everything optimally. The chapter on encouraging language helped me see how my perfectionism was affecting how I spoke to my son, inadvertently passing on the same harsh standards I was trying to escape. I've started modeling self-compassion out loud, saying things like "I made a mistake and that's okay, I'll try differently next time" so she learns that errors are human rather than catastrophic. My anxiety around parenting hasn't disappeared completely, but it's significantly reduced. I can enjoy moments with my kid now without constantly evaluating my performance.
