Some meals stay with you long after they’re over… and our visit to @malgudi.ind by @shankar.mahadevan , now open in Lower Parel, Mumbai, was exactly that kind of experience. A space that celebrates South Indian flavours with so much love, nostalgia and creativity — and you can feel it from the very first bite. What made the evening even more special was the legend himself, Shankar Mahadevan, walking from table to table, personally asking every guest about their experience. There was something so genuine and grounding about that moment… a reminder that food, music, and hospitality come from the same place — the heart. At one point, we got so engrossed in conversation that we didn’t realise our Ghee Podi Thatte Idli was getting cold — and he gently reminded us to eat it while it was still piping hot because that’s when it tastes the best. Honestly, I’m not sure… because even when it wasn’t very hot, it was still divine. And oh, the food. Top-notch. Thoughtful. Comforting. Innovative. From the Podi Cheese Balls, Butter Pepper Garlic Water Chestnut, and Anna Style Crispy Lotus Root to the Benne Dosa, Mulbagal Legacy Dosa, Ghee Podi Thatte Idli, and the Sri Lankan Tamil Curry With Idiyappam — each dish had its own story. My personal favourite? The Sri Lankan Tamil Curry With Idiyappam, soulful and absolutely unforgettable. We ended with the Bisi Bele Bibimbap, Kaki Sheera, and an Iced Kaapi With Jaggery that deserves its own fanbase. And if you’re a filter coffee lover… theirs is out of this world. But the cocktails come a close second! If you enjoy experiential South Indian food that feels both familiar and fresh, this place is a must-visit.
