I woke up groggy that morning. My 34 year old self hadn’t been on two wheels for a while and it took more than a couple of alarms to get me going. As I brewed my morning cuppa, the BMW F900GS stood in my parking lot patiently, so still, so lifeless. I had picked it up from the service centre and rode it back home the previous day but all I did was spew profanity at others while I navigated through traffic. The motorcycle needed to breathe, I needed to breathe. And we did. But it didn’t start off as I had hoped it would. While the engine is strong, the tyres are noisy. Ofcourse, there was something else about the GS that wanted to be explored. And, I knew what it was. After getting to the shoot location, I realised how off I was with my riding gear. A touring jacket with regular riding pants and a full spec race helmet. And no roads in sight. It was a mismatch. But the golden hour was ticking away and we needed to get going. A swift recce later, the camera started rolling and the movie started! And no, I wasn’t the protagonist. The F900GS was all show and all go. My physical body was just swaying to the tune of the motorcycle. Dirt is where it feels the strongest. Big guns flexing! I felt alive, awake and smiling. All the action shots are with the motorcycle’s traction control set to 1. I was sliding, drifting, kicking up a dust storm and happy; all at once. The lean profile, accessible performance and offroad friendly nature is what makes the 900 great. Imagine coming from a riding sabbatical (because of my injury), jumping on to a big bike and getting ready to please the camera. I was drowning with anxiety but it felt like home, like a big brother holding my hand and leading the way. The day started soulless but ended full of life. As I got back home that evening and looked at the parked GS one last time, it whispered - “You are welcome” Photos by the super talented @ganjay_goblin . . .
