Walking through the small streets of Udupi, just a few minutes from the Krishna temple, I was hungry and curious at the same time. While scrolling through Google Maps, checking out random places to eat, one name popped up - Vithal Cool Drinks. They’re not “famous for cold drinks” as such, but they do serve this amazing freshly made kokum sharbat. I tried it on my first visit- it was so refreshing that I ended up ordering the same thing again the next time I went. They also serve good filter coffee, by the way. On that first visit, I found out the Kollu Idli/Horsegram Idli/ Kulith Idli (same Kulth using which we make curry and khichdi in Jammu) that I’d read about is only made on Saturdays. The guy at the counter smiled and said, “Only on Saturday!” I left a little disappointed, but now I was even more curious. Later, I found out this idli is actually a Saturday breakfast tradition for the Konkani GSB (Goud Saraswat Brahmin) community. The whole week I kept thinking about it. So, Saturday morning I was back there, a little early this time. A few locals were already waiting. I ordered the kokum sharbat again (couldn’t skip it!) and finally got to try the horsegram idli - soft, earthy, ghee melting on top, chutney on the side. It wasn’t just an idli anymore. It felt like a small piece of Udupi’s tradition on a plate. All thanks to a random Google Maps search and a bit of curiosity. Hanji apni Jammu wali Kulth and Uttarakhand wali Gahat ki idli hai ye! Also, thanks to @kini.the.foodie and my college @wgsha.manipal faculty for suggesting places to eat and explore while living in Manipal that I will be talking about in future posts.
