Career advice I'd give if I weren't afraid to hurt your feelings - communication edition. Someone needs to tell you this, so it might as well be me. Your communication skills are holding you back more than you realize. You ramble in meetings instead of making your point. You send emails that require three follow-ups because you weren't clear the first time. You say "I think maybe we could possibly consider" instead of "I recommend we do this." You apologize before sharing ideas that are actually brilliant. You avoid difficult conversations until they become impossible situations. You nod and smile when you should ask clarifying questions. The reality is: Nobody cares how smart you are if you can't communicate it effectively. Your great ideas die in translation because you can't articulate them clearly. You're not being "humble" when you downplay your contributions. You're being invisible. That promotion you want? It's going to someone who can explain their value in 30 seconds, not someone who needs 10 minutes to get to the point. Your manager isn't a mind reader. If you don't tell them what you need, they'll assume you don't need anything. Stop doing this: Using filler words that make you sound uncertain. Ending statements like questions. Over-explaining simple concepts. Waiting for the "perfect moment" to speak up. Start doing this: Practice your key points before important conversations. Use confident language. Ask direct questions. Give clear, actionable updates. Your career success depends more on how you communicate than what you know. Fix this, and everything else gets easier.
