Weird things I did daily to stay sane, healthy, and employed at a toxic workplace until my exit plan unfolded. Sometimes you can't just quit immediately. Bills need paying, references matter, and finding the right opportunity takes time. Here's how I survived the chaos while strategically planning my escape. My daily survival toolkit: I started treating my toxic boss like a toddler having a tantrum. Neutral responses, no emotional reactions, just "I understand your concern" on repeat. It saved my sanity and my reputation. I kept a "wins journal" hidden in my desk. Every small accomplishment, positive feedback, or successful project went in there. When the gaslighting got intense, I had proof of my actual performance. I scheduled "bathroom breaks" that were actually 5-minute meditation sessions. Locked stall, deep breathing, mental reset. Sounds ridiculous but it kept me from losing it in meetings. I started documenting everything in emails. "Just to confirm our conversation about..." became my favorite phrase. Created a paper trail and protected myself from selective memory. I treated job searching like a part-time job. One application during lunch, one LinkedIn connection after work, one networking coffee per week. Small consistent actions toward my exit. I found one ally in the office and we became each other's reality check. Having someone confirm "yes, that was actually insane" prevented me from questioning my own judgment. The goal wasn't to fix the toxic environment. It was to protect my mental health, maintain my professional reputation, and create space to find something better. Six months later, I landed a role with 40% salary increase and actual work-life balance. The exit plan worked. Ready to create your strategic exit plan from a toxic workplace?
