Contrary to popular belief, humans share more biological characteristics with herbivores than with carnivores. Our teeth are a prime example - flat molars and smaller canines are designed for grinding plants accompanied by the jaw movements needed to grind plant foods. And unlike carnivores with claws and sharp fangs, humans have to rely on tools to hunt and process meat. Our digestive system further reinforces this: a long intestinal tract allows for the slow breakdown and absorption of fibrous plant materials, whereas carnivores have short guts to quickly expel rotting meat. Also, our saliva is rich in amylase, an enzyme specialised for breaking down carbohydrates, a hallmark of plant-heavy diets. Beyond digestion, even our instincts lean herbivorous. A juicy apple or a bleeding carcass - what excites you more naturally? Herbivores and humans both lack the instinctive chase-and-kill drive. Instead, our hands are adept at picking and preparing food, not for taking down prey. Nutritionally, humans thrive on plant-based diets rich in vitamins, fiber, and antioxidants. In fact, many chronic diseases tied to meat consumption, such as heart disease and cancer, also highlight how our biology protests against heavy carnivorous eating. At the end of the day, humans are omnivores, capable of consuming both meat and plants. However, when we examine the biological evidence, it becomes clear that our bodies are optimally designed for a plant-based diet.
