The first photo is a yearly ritual now. Every January. For the last 11 years but today you will read the story of how Toothless came into my life. You’ve read about the Karizma. You’ve read about the CBR 250R. Brilliant motorcycles, both of them. Strangely, neither ever had a name. Maybe I never felt the need to. But this one, this one was different. And it doesn’t take a genius to figure out why it was called Toothless. August 2014! I moved to Pune to join PowerDrift. A 24-year-old with a backpack full of excitement and absolutely no clue how adulthood actually worked. New city, away from home, startup chaos and dreams that were far bigger than my bank balance. A month later, life threw a curveball. Appendix inflammation. Swift surgery. Then months of bed rest. Gym paused. Work slowed. “Buff Varun” was born purely out of forced inactivity and boredom. An idle mind is dangerous and mine went straight to the internet and stayed there. Tabs after tabs after tabs all leading to one obsession: an inline-four motorcycle. The two-wheeler market back then didn’t exactly have many options that were kind to shallow pockets. The only other temptation was the Street Triple 675 but whispers of it being underpowered spread quickly and that door shut just as fast as it opened. Thanks to a media unit at PowerDrift, I managed a long test ride of the Z800. Long enough to understand its quirks, its flaws, and its personality. I knew exactly what I was signing up for and I was okay with all of it. Months of overthinking later, the dream materialised. My inline-four. My first big bike. #Toothless. And oh, what a machine. 96 kmph in 6th gear is that sweet spot where the engine felt like a magic carpet. No vibrations just refinement like nothing else I had ever experienced before. For the first three years, we were inseparable. Mumbai/Goa runs, spontaneous highway sprints, and even a trip to the racetrack for CSS. Odometer numbers climbed, memories kept stacking like tetris.
