Time seems to stand still as you walk amidst the ruins of what was once a great Buddhist complex at Udayagiri in the Jajpur District of Odisha, India. This place is not to be confused with Udayagiri Caves, which are located close to Bhubaneshwar. This Udayagiri is located about 83 kilometers from Bhubaneshwar city and is one of the Buddhist sites that forms what is called the Diamond Triangle along with Ratnagiri and Lalitgiri. The ruins of Udayagiri are believed to be those of a Buddhist complex by the name of Madhavapura Mahavihara. The sprawling site is only partially excavated and one can only imagine the treasure that lies under the mounds. Numerous Stupas, exquisite sculptures, and some beautiful carvings give some idea of the grandeur of the place, which is believed to have been active between the 7th and 12th centuries.
