Gujarat Uniform Civil Code Bill 2026 The Gujarat Assembly has passed the Uniform Civil Code Bill, 2026, becoming the second state after Uttarakhand to approve a law that proposes a common legal framework for all citizens, regardless of religion. The Bill was introduced by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel after a state-appointed panel submitted its report on implementing the Uniform Civil Code in Gujarat. The proposed law will apply to the entire state and even to Gujarat residents living outside the state, while Scheduled Tribes and protected customary groups are exempted. Key Provisions of the Bill The Bill aims to create a uniform legal system for marriage, divorce, succession, and live-in relationships. Live-in relationships must be registered, and their termination will require a formal declaration. The law prohibits bigamy, meaning a marriage will be valid only if neither person has a living spouse. Marriage registration will be compulsory, although non-registration will not invalidate the marriage, but penalties may apply. The Bill ensures equal rights for children born within or outside marriage, including adopted children and those born through assisted reproductive technology. It also standardises rules related to divorce, judicial separation, succession, and wills to promote gender justice, secularism, and social reform.
