“I am a Marine Wildlife Filmmaker and Conservationist. I work with the fishing, diving, and scientific community to further UN’s SDG 14- ‘Life below water’. I grew up with a father who loved the ocean himself, because of which I would often find myself on a beach at least once a month - playing with the sand, shells, being in the water. And even though we don’t go to the beaches together anymore because I don’t live with them - it has been a wonderful affinity I share with the ocean and her mysteries. I consider the ocean, especially the Arabian Sea to be my mother - I go to her to seek guidance, love, understanding and forgiveness. You will always find me in Goa, Kerala, or Sindhudurg before any major changes in my life because I spend time talking to ‘mom’ before I do anything. More so, I consider everyone who works towards ocean issues as her children and therefore my ‘ocean’ siblings. Being a woman in spaces like filmmaking which is largely patriarchal has been an uphill battle. Standing ground and asking to be accepted in spaces of filmmaking, conservation, public policy focusing on the niche that I work with has been challenging - BUT worth it! In the last two years though, I have learnt the power of community and especially that of communities made up of women. These communities of, for, and by women are a safer space to exist in; it’s beautiful to see how women fill in the gaps of solidarity, comfort, togetherness, safety, patience, and access. I hope for women around me and myself to be open to accepting and being involved in these spaces without apprehension or fear of judgment.” 🔹BROWNBUDDY #42 🧜🏽♀️🔹
