Why babies get suddenly cranky at 5–9 months (often teething) Between 5–9 months, gums start swelling as teeth prepare to erupt. This causes discomfort, drooling, biting, disturbed sleep, and sudden fussiness—even in an otherwise happy baby. How you can help soothe your baby • Offer a clean, chilled teether (not frozen) to numb sore gums • Let baby chew on a clean finger for gentle pressure • Increase breastfeeds or comfort feeds—sucking is soothing • Do extra cuddles and contact naps; babies seek closeness when in pain • Use distraction: gentle play, songs, or a short walk • If pain is severe and sleep is badly affected, paracetamol as per weight can be used after consulting a doctor Teething discomfort comes in waves.
