Welcome to my Tour Stop today. Finished my favourite James Caine book back to back. He gave two psychological thrillers that settled in the same kind of premises. I found "The Couple at the Lake Cabin" similar to my previous read "The In-laws". It was predictable and the twists weren't surprising, I felt the author just shuffled the characters and all the time it feels like I am reading "The In-laws" again. The pattern was very similar and ruined the shocking elements. On the other hand, "The Family Cabin" is a slow burn psychological thriller, it has the same secluded cabin theme with rather mature psychological aspects. It has a dysfunctional family, psychological immaturity that leads to a nail biting suspense drama in woods. A weekend retreat at the family cabin was meant to be a joyful celebration for Mike’s 40th birthday, planned as a surprise by his wife. But their once-happy marriage is unraveling. Mike’s frequent absences leave his wife and young son alone, and she’s desperate to reconnect. This getaway was supposed to fix everything. But when she arrives to set up, strange noises echo from the basement. There, she discovers a terrified young woman, bound and pleading for help. Before she can act, Mike arrives unexpectedly. Who is this stranger? Why is she here? And what secrets is Mike hiding? It started very slowly, you have to keep patience till the middle of the book. The final closure keeps me guessing till the end of the book. The manipulation, the trigger, family love - bonding and suspense played very well with a crafted storyline. Overall I can say it was not a great experience like his previous books but it was quite a decent read.
