No matter how your team performs, ultimately you are the one who has to face your seniors. If your team members miss their numbers, it falls on you. Maybe you have to face consequences for that. But a 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗳𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺. Before you sit in a meeting and react strongly to people for not achieving targets, I want to share one 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗴𝗲: While talking to your people, remember this— Everyone in your team is 𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗼𝗻𝗲’𝘀 𝗗𝗮𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗲𝗿, 𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗼𝗻𝗲’𝘀 𝗦𝗼𝗻, 𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗼𝗻𝗲’𝘀 𝗠𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿, 𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗼𝗻𝗲’𝘀 𝗙𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿. So 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀. Inject empathy into your response. Be ready to listen to their side. And remember, there is always a more human way to say what you want to say. Your leadership is not defined when things go well. Your leadership is defined by how you respond in tough times. Numbers will come and go, but people will always remember 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 when it mattered the most. What do you think? Does leadership today require more empathy?
