Many title holders fear being vulnerable because they think that if they share their weaknesses with their team members or juniors, people will think, “Our boss is weak.” They believe the leader will lose power. So leaders stop being vulnerable. They stop sharing openly with their people. When I shared the screen with @simonsinek I wanted to get his perspective on this. I asked him: 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗺𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝘃𝘂𝗹𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿? And as leadership trainers, how can we help leaders become more open and vulnerable? He suggested that the word “vulnerable” itself carries psychological fear. It sounds like we have to share all our weaknesses and strengths publicly. And when it comes to weaknesses, as humans, we are not always ready for that. So what should we do? He said we don’t necessarily need to focus on the word “vulnerability.” Instead, we should focus on the behavior behind it. As leaders: – We should admit our mistakes. – We should ask for help when required. – If we don’t know something, we should say, “I don’t know.” When titleholders do this, they create a culture where people can accept their mistakes without fear. They feel safe asking for help. If they don’t know something, they admit it openly. And what happens? You create a culture of transparency. But if, as a leader, you never admit your mistakes, never ask for help, and always act like you know everything, you create a different culture. A culture where people hide their mistakes. A culture where people pretend they know everything. A culture of hiding and faking. So focus on the behavior, not the word. At the end of the day, we don’t want a word. We want the behavior and the results that come from that behavior. #leadership #vulnerability #peoplefirstacademy #corporateemployees #simonsinek
