What is Upanayana?👇🏻 Upanayana is one of the most important samskaras in Hindu tradition. The word itself means “leading closer” - closer to knowledge, to discipline, to a life of learning. After this ceremony, the boy is no longer just a child. He becomes a “𝗗𝘃𝗶𝗷𝗮”- twice-born. His first birth was physical and this is his second. In ancient times, the moment a boy received his Janivara, he would leave home and go live in a Gurukula! The Mama’s (Maternal uncle) role through the entire Upanayana is central. My brother is currently in the US and couldn’t make it, so Vinit stepped in and carried out all his duties. The ceremony begins with the Mama entering by carrying rice on his shoulders (in old times, the girl’s side would bring rice as their contribution to the festivities) - 𝟬:𝟭𝟲 𝟬:𝟮𝟯 - Before the rituals begin, the Mother sits with her son and feeds him one last time as a child. This is called Mathrubhojana because after this meal, symbolically, childhood is over 𝟬:𝟮𝟰 - The Vatu - the boy undergoing the ceremony - then has his hair cut, is given a ritual bath, dressed in traditional attire, taught his first mantras & then carried to the matapa by his Mama 𝟬:𝟯𝟰 - At the mantapa, the Mama places the vatu on a bed of rice - the imagery of being back in the womb, surrounded by nourishment. He is then wrapped in a cloth 𝟬:𝟰𝟭 - The Janivara - the sacred thread is placed on him. He will wear it for the rest of his life. When the cloth is finally lifted, the first face he is meant to see is his mother’s. His second birth, and the first eyes he opens to are hers 𝟬:𝟱𝟭 - A cloth is then placed over both father and son, closing them away from the world. The father whispers the Gayatri Mantra into his son’s ear. In that moment, the father becomes the guru. This is Brahmopadesham 𝟬:𝟱𝟱 - The ceremony ends with Bhikshe. The vatu asks “Bhavathi Bhikshamdehi” asking for alms. I’ve tried my best to explain each ritual. If I’ve missed something or gotten anything wrong, please feel free to correct me. #upanayana #brahmopadesham #brahminrituals
