You’ll hear it before you see it. 💦 It’s not just a waterfall, it’s a full-body experience. The ground rumbles. The wind howls. And if you’re anywhere near the edge, you’re getting drenched. Here’s what you need to know if you’re planning to visit 👇 📍 Location: Northeast Iceland, inside Vatnajökull National Park 🛣️ How to get there: West side (Road 862) is paved, easy access, open longer. Go here if you’re in a rental car or on a tight schedule. East side (Road 864) is gravel, only open in summer, gets you closer to the waterfall’s drop, but requires patience and preferably a 4x4. 🥾 Hikes: ~10 mins walk to Dettifoss ~20 mins to nearby Selfoss (worth it) Trails can be muddy and slippery, wear real shoes. 🧤 Pack: waterproof jacket, hiking shoes, snacks, and a sense of awe. 🚻 Only the west side has toilets and a marked parking lot. No cafes, so prep accordingly. 🕒 Best time to visit: June–Sept for full access. Early morning = fewer people. Save this if you’re doing the Ring Road. It’s loud, wet, dramatic. #dettifoss #icelandringroad #icelandtravelguide #roadtripiceland
