“Some trips are unexpected, yet perhaps they are meant to be.” Lately, I’ve been into scrapbooking—a cute little hobby that helps me arrange memories and reflect on the lessons that shape me. While adding pictures and notes last night, it hit me—I wasn’t even supposed to be in Varanasi last month. At the last minute, I decided to travel with my mom and maasis, thinking it would be just a short getaway. But what started as a feel-good trip turned into something far bigger—a journey to Maha Kumbh. As someone who loves mythological stories (thanks to my father who read to me every night as a kid) and is deeply fascinated by Shiva—not just as a deity, but as a symbol of self-actualization (neuroscience nerdy here)— being in Varanasi felt like everything had aligned at the perfect time. And then I found out—this Maha Kumbh is happening under rare astrological alignments that last occurred 144 years ago. A once-in-a-lifetime event, unfolding right in front of me. (how exciting!!) In just three days, we visited 13 temples—the huge and the little ones—each holding centuries of devotion and energy. Every place we visited served as a reminder of how vast and interconnected everything truly is. I’m not exaggerating when I say—nothing has ever felt this profound, culturally, historically, or spiritually. The energy, the devotion, the sheer enormity of human faith—it was overwhelming, wonderful, and beyond words. If you’re in India and get the chance, please go. Experiencing Varanasi and Maha Kumbh during this time is something you absolutely shouldn’t miss.
