Ellora Caves: A Marvel of Ancient Engineering! Ellora Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Maharashtra, India, is a breathtaking testament to ancient craftsmanship. What’s striking about Ellora is that it houses Jain, Hindu, and Buddhist temples together, showcasing religious harmony in ancient times. The highlight of Ellora is the Kailash temple, a monolithic structure carved out of tonnes of basalt rock. What’s intriguing is that massive amounts of rock were excavated to create this marvel, and to this day, no one knows where all that excavated rock ended up! The carvings and intricate sculptures in Kailash temple depict Hindu epics like Ramayana and Mahabharat. Looks familiar? Yes, the Kailash temple is featured on the 20 rupee Indian note! It amazes me that ancient folks could create something as extraordinary as Ellora using the tools and techniques of their time. The scale and detail of the carvings left me in awe. Can’t help but compare it to other wonders like Tiger’s Nest (Paro Taktsang) in Bhutan – both Ellora and Tiger’s Nest are likely to leave anyone awestruck. Both are architectural marvels set in stunning landscapes, telling stories of devotion and ancient ingenuity.
