:: ALIPORE CENTRAL CORRECTIONAL HOME :: Day 68 - #projectkolkata , Location: Alipore, Kolkata , The Alipore Central Correctional Home is a national historic landmark situated in the heart of Kolkata. This 116-year-old building is listed as a Grade I heritage site in Kolkata. , It stands distinguished by its characteristic brick-red walls. , This historic correctional home served as a place of confinement for several prominent freedom fighters who fought for India's independence. Among them were Jawaharlal Nehru, Subhash Chandra Bose, Chittaranjan Das, Dinesh Gupta, and Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, to name just a few. The Alipore Central Correctional Home, bearing witness to the sacrifices and struggles of these brave individuals, remained operational until 2019 when the inmates were relocated to Baruipur, on the outskirts of Kolkata. Today, the Alipore Central Correctional Home has been transformed into a memorial and museum, honoring the indomitable spirit and sacrifices of those who fought for India's freedom. The existing jail campus has been repurposed into a world-class Independence Museum, acting as a stimulant to attract visitors to the vibrant Alipore Green city. The Independence Museum showcases the journey of India's freedom struggle during the British period. Visitors can immerse themselves in the displays of paintings, photographs, maps, installations, and statues of the freedom fighters. The museum also houses a collection of letters, documents, and artifacts related to the independence movement.
