
A recent survey revealed that more than a third (38%) of therapists working with under 18s have clients seeking mental health guidance from AI platforms. It’s alarming that children are increasingly having to turn to AI chatbots like ChatGPT for mental health support, often unable to tell whether the advice they’re getting is safe or even true. Some have already suffered devastating consequences. And this is likely just the tip of the iceberg, with many more children struggling in silence, without access to real therapy. We are witnessing a generation quietly seeking comfort from chatbots instead of people, children typing their fears out seeking helpful responses.And for every case reported, how many more young adults are struggling invisibly? Although AI is here to stay and we might have mixed ideologies towards it, young adults relying on AI instead of families and friends opens the door to a lot to ponder upon. We are forced to confront a deeper question: What is missing in the real world that they are seeking comfort in artificial intelligence?
