It hits you in phases. It hits you when you’re just going about your day, staying in your own lane, and suddenly it dawns on you that your child is growing up. That in a few years, he might not need you the way he does today. It was an ordinary weeknight. Som and I were both stuck on calls till pretty late. With the holidays almost over, Vihaan’s screen time was back to an hour, and he’d already used it up, so he was in his room. At least, that’s what I thought. When I finally walked into his room after my calls, it was quite late. The door was closed. I pushed it open and found a howling Vihaan. For a moment, I thought he was just being dramatic or excited to see me. But when I sat beside him and asked what was wrong, he simply said, “I feel emotional.” The song playing was the same one I’ve used in this post. One of my favourites too. So we sat together. We listened to it again. Sang along. Let the words sink in. And then, before ending the day, made a quick video call to my sisters. It’s a bittersweet song, and there was something so beautiful about watching him really hear the lyrics and feel them. I can’t remember the last time I listened to a song with that kind of attention, where I wasn’t doing anything else, wasn’t scrolling, wasn’t distracted. Just feeling every word. Maybe that’s what growing up is. And maybe that’s what parenting is too, watching someone discover emotions one by one. When was the last time a song made you stop and feel? #moments #momandson #write #kids
