Indian chess continues to make the world proud. 🇮🇳♟️ World No.1 Magnus Carlsen suffered another setback against an Indian player on December 29, 2025, when GM Arjun Erigaisi defeated him in Round 9 of the FIDE World Blitz Championship in Doha. Playing a tense Sicilian Defence under heavy time pressure, Carlsen eventually lost on time as Arjun kept his nerves and pressed the advantage. Visibly frustrated, Carlsen slammed the table after the loss, a reaction similar to his outburst earlier this year after losing to D Gukesh. This win marks Arjun Erigaisi’s second victory over Carlsen in 2025, after also beating him in classical chess at Norway Chess. After 13 rounds on Day 1, Arjun was joint leader with 10 points, while Carlsen trailed by one point despite having won the World Rapid Championship just a day earlier. The World Blitz Championship continues today, December 30, with the remaining rounds and knockouts, as Indian stars keep challenging the very best on the global stage.
