Rhododendron is a large group of flowering plants known for bright clusters of blooms and thick green leaves. You see them in gardens and forests across Asia, Europe, and North America. Over 1,000 species exist. They range from low shrubs to tall trees. In India, the most familiar species is Rhododendron arboreum. It grows in the Himalayas and produces deep red flowers in spring. In states like Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, it adds color to mountain slopes between March and May. In the Himalayas, they grow between 1,500 to 3,000 meters. Cold winters and mild summers suit them. Cultural and local use In parts of North India, especially Himachal and Uttarakhand, people use the flowers of Rhododendron arboreum to make juice. Locally, it is called “buransh.” The drink has a tart taste and is popular in summer.
